After beating Xavier Musketeers in a close match on Friday (4-3), Ball State men’s tennis (5-1) beat IU Southeast in both matches this afternoon. Head coach Bill Richards said his team “did what they had to do.”
“For the guys that played against Xavier yesterday, I'm proud of because the Xavier match was very emotional,” Richards said. “These were different kind of matches. A few of the guys had trouble, as evidence at our loss at number one doubles in the first match. But overall, I thought we did a pretty good job.”
In the first match, the Cardinals won the doubles point to obtain wins at second and third positions. In the pair's first dual match of the season, freshmen Khamasi Muhiga and Bryce Bonin defeated sophomores Brock Winchell and Sam Venter, 6-0. Muhiga said he was pretty nervous today, due to it being his first dual match of his college tennis career.
“My parents and my brother came to watch,” Muhiga said. “That’s why I was pretty nervous, but it was good.”
Muhiga went on to win his singles match against sophomore Daulton Fensler in the first match. The Cardinals won all five singles matches in two sets.
In the second match, the Cardinals turned to their bench against IU Southeast. At the third doubles position, freshman Alec Robillard and redshirt junior Patrick O’Connor won their doubles match (6-3).
“I had a good partner in Alec Robillard,” O’Connor said. “He was playing really well today. We’re a good pair and definitely a force to be reckoned with.”
The Cardinals won all six singles matches today to preserve their 4-0 home record. In its next match against Cleveland State, Muhiga said more people should come and support the team.
“Hopefully we can get a lot more people to watch us now that we are undefeated at home,” Muhiga said. “It would be good to get more supporters.”
Ball State returns Feb. 10 when it hosts Cleveland State. The match will start at 1 p.m. in Northwest YMCA.
