Early Sunday morning, the Muncie Police Department was dispatched to Muncie Liquors at the corner of North Wheeling and West Riverside avenues for a theft.

Employees of the liquor store told police that a “flood” of intoxicated people came into the store just after midnight trying to distract employees while someone placed a bottle of vodka in their pants.

Muncie police arrested Robert La Renzio III Vaughn, 21, Muncie, and preliminarily charged him with battery with serious bodily injury, interfering with reporting of a crime and theft.

After an employee tried to confront the suspect with the bottle of vodka, a physical altercation started in the parking lot.

When the employee tried to call 911, Vaughn punched the employee in the forehead, causing them to fall and land face first on the pavement.

According to Delaware County Emergency Communications, Delaware County EMS was dispatched to the scene.

The suspects fled in a vehicle down West Riverside Avenue and were later stopped by Ball State University Police officers in the parking lot between the College of Architecture and Planning and Noyer Complex.

Vaughn is being held in the Delaware County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
