Jack Salzman wanted his first internship to be an “out of my comfort zone” experience and he got it.

He wanted to find something that would give him the opportunity to really use his video production and social media skills.

One day when he was scrolling through his Facebook feed he found what he was looking for in an ad for Top Israel Interns, a program that matches up students and graduates from around the world with internship opportunities from virtually every field and specialization.

The senior telecommunications major applied, got accepted and was placed with BeLive.Tv, a media/news company in Haifa, Israel, over 6,000 miles away from his hometown in Chicago.

“When I was offered the opportunity to intern in Haifa, Israel I couldn’t pass it up,” Salzman said. “There is so much innovation coming out of Israel and I wanted to get the best possible experience with that in mind.”

As the marketing and social media intern for BeLive.Tv, Salzman was responsible for helping the company provide resources to local business professionals to successfully perform and put together effective broadcast, like Facebook Live.

Because of his background in video production, Salzman was also able to create and edit videos for the company founded in 2016.

“I think being able to do more with video outside of my internship concentration showed that my bosses were pleased and wanted me to succeed with my ability," Salzman said.    “When I went into this, I really didn’t know what to expect. I was worried if I would be comfortable and if my boss would see my true potential, but upon leaving I feel like ‘wow,’ it was an amazing two months.”

Working for the company was only half of the experience.

Haifa, were Salzman stayed, was “not a tourist city by any means.” It was a very local based city were English was not a common spoken language.

“Not very many of the people there could speak English so I had to really learn how to adopt into a new environment,” Salzman said. “I knew some Hebrew going into the country, but I learned a lot more being there in order to get around, order food in restaurants or ask for simple directions.”

Even though Salzman recently returned from the 10-week internship, he said he still wants to stay involved with BeLive.Tv, doing work remotely from home.

“The ability to intern aboard is an unbelievable experience,” he said. “I don’t think I would have had quite the same internship experience if I did this in the states.”

While he hasn’t “pinned down a focus” yet, Salzman said he hopes to get into the greater media field with content creation or editing after graduation.
