Local artists too loud at Muncie Gras

Last Saturday, a group of local DJs performed at Muncie Gras. The group, Electronic Dance Music Collective, regularly performs at Muncie venues. EDMC performed at Muncie Gras last year, but this year offered new challenges and opportunities for it.

One challenge came early in the night. As one of the headlining live bands was set to perform, the event organizer approached the group and asked for it to go on a one-hour break.

The organizer said the group’s music was too loud and drowned out the sound of the live band. The group was asked to pause its show for an hour and was given information from numerous sources on when it could continue.

Prior to the pause, the area was beginning to fill up with people as the second of five DJs, Lonestra, was concluding his set. The group worried the break would end the momentum it had already built.

However, these concerns were quickly dispelled as the show restarted at 11 p.m. and the crowd flooded back to the stage.

Having to compete for time is unusual for the Music Collective. It's typically the only music group at venues.

Muncie Gras is more like a festival compared to the average music venue and offers artistic opportunities. For DJs like T-ROUB, who has been performing for over six years, these are the kinds of shows he loves.

“Normally If I were to play at a bar or something I would tailor my set a little more to the type of crowd that is there, more rap, something like that. But since we are at a festival-type setting I can actually play some things that define me as an artist,” T-ROUB said.

Despite the break and confusion, artists said the event was a huge success.

The group's next event, Lantern EDM, will feature four DJs from EDMC, including two who performed at Muncie Gras, TROUB and Re:born.

Lantern EDM will take place this Friday at Be Here Now in The Village.
