Editor's note: Muncie Origins is a Ball State Daily News series profiling various businesses that originated in Muncie.
Founded right here in Muncie, MDTekk prides itself on offering convenient and versatile services to Indiana residents.
MDTekk is a tech repair service that will trade, recycle and repair “pretty much [anything] if it has a battery or you can plug into a wall …” according to district manager Jeremy Bryant.
In 2013, Ball State graduates Zachary Marvel and Justin Dunmyer pooled their efforts together with a goal: bring convenient tech services where there were none. Avoiding major cities such as Indianapolis, MDTekk looks toward communities that don’t have versatile tech repair stores.
One year after its original founding, MDTekk opened an Anderson branch on May 28, 2014.
Business doesn’t come easy though, as MDTekk faces competition from mall kiosks and “mom and pop shops” that provide iPhone repair, Bryant said.
MDTekk distinguishes itself from competitors by advertising repairs on multiple electronics, and it’s evident in the backroom at the Muncie Village location. Circuit boards, Macbooks, video game consoles and even a “Mr. Coffee” filled nearly every table and shelf in the building.
“If you focus on one specific thing, especially in this type of business you’re not gonna make it long,” Bryant said. “We adapt well.”
MDTekk exemplifies versatility in more than just its services. Its effective business practices can be credited to the skills of the upper management.
Marvel, the company's founder, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics, while additionally serving in the United States National Guard as a finance officer. MDTekk labels itself as “veteran-owned.”
Bryant is the district manager and graduated with a major in sports administration and a minor in management.
“I’m using more of my minor than my major, that’s for sure,” he said.
MDTekk’s influence doesn’t just stop at Muncie and Anderson. MDtekk owns a sister company, School Tech Repair, which reaches out to towns such as Lawrenceburg and Lafayette, repairing tablets and computers for local schools within those areas.
Further using its versatility, the umbrella of MDTekk offers what others can’t all over Indiana.
