INDIANAPOLIS — Ball State men’s swimming and diving started off the spring semester a few days early, falling to both IUPUI, 191.5-50.5, and Xavier, 151-76, in a dual meet Jan. 6. Head coach Bob Thomas said the Cardinals looked tired after the meet.
“Some of the guys did well [like I was expecting],” Thomas said. “But a few that the break time they had, as well as this last week, caught up to them.”
But there were some bright spots in the meet.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, junior Isaac Walling finished fourth with a time of 10:08.29, while senior JD Middleton finished sixth with 10:19.21 for his time.
Freshman Ben Andrew finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.76 time, while senior Austin Green finished tied for fourth with a 21.86 seconds. The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Chase Jackson, sophomore Cullen Tyler, senior Tanner Barton and Green finished in sixth with a time of 1:38.46
On the boards, sophomores Lane Sawyer (216.95 points) and Gabe Dean (163.95 points) took fifth and seventh, respectively, in the one-meter dive.
“For Lane being kind of hurt, he did pretty well,” head diving coach Nick Gayes said. “Gabe did a good job. He did a lot of new dives today, so I was actually pretty impressed with what he did.”
The team returns to action Jan. 14 at Eastern Michigan.
