I knew Greg Hobson ever since I was a baby. He was, by far and bar none, one of the kindest people I have ever met. All while growing up, he would attend family gatherings and ask, earnestly, what I was up to with my life. Needless to say, he was excited to learn that I had gotten into Ball State, where he had been working as a custodian. True enough, I would be waiting for a class to start at the LaFollette Complex when I would hear him call my name and we would chat briefly about how the day was going for the both of us. Again, throughout my time as an undergraduate and graduate school student at Ball State, we would bump into each other another constant. This past year, he had been working at Ball State for 30 years. He was looking forward to a banquet being held this year for staff at Ball State. Sadly, he will never go to that banquet.

The biggest thing Greg showed me growing up is how someone who is honest working could be happy. Never once did he complain about any work he was asked to do and he always was looking for more to do. Never one to be nasty or bitter, he stepped up to a hard day’s work with a smile on his face. He was the epitome of a hardworking person who simply wanted to help others. It is this lesson I hope survives, as I am sure he was well-known on campus. Honesty, hard work and a willingness to help others are fundamental virtues to having a happy life. I saw it every time I saw Greg. It is something that I am going to have to remember to strive for a little harder now without a clear example.

You will be missed.
