Top ranked teams to miss NCAA tournament (conference)

Ball State soccer held out hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after an early exit from the Mid-American Conference Tournament, but Monday night the team learned its season is officially over.
The Cardinals (14-3-4) won the MAC regular season title and finished the season ranked 51st in the RPI rankings, but did not make the 64-team tournament.
Nineteen teams ranked lower than Ball State made the cut, but only two of those teams — Oklahoma State and Texas A&M — received at-large bids. The rest of the lower-ranked teams were conference champions that received automatic bids.
There were also five teams ranked higher than the Cardinals that missed out on the tournament — No. 31 Princeton, No. 39 Virginia Tech, No. 40 Saint Joseph's, No. 48 Iowa State and No. 50 Rice.
Though they won't play in the postseason, several Ball State players won awards for their performances this season, including senior defender Lorina White, who was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
