I certainly am a fan of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." As many of the other fans were, I was excited and nervous to watch the new remake of the show “Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again!” I had little expectations since I am not a fan of remade films. I prefer originals, the way they were intended to be viewed with the original cast. However, I gave it a shot.
For those who don't know the story of "Rocky Horror," I will give you a brief summary. The story is about a couple who get engaged and are on their way to go meet an old friend to share the news. On the way, they get lost and end up inside the castle of Doctor Frank-N-Furter, a “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.”
As that line suggests, the film is very risqué and sexual. But also very strange and fascinating. This movie is truly iconic and has its own little fan base that becomes a piece of the film.
Some may be all right with the absence of certain elements of the film. But in my opinion, it ruins the idea Jim Sharman, the original director, had in mind. The film is meant to be disturbing and sexual.
In the old film, the costumes, the makeup and the way the actors interact developed the idea of a risqué yet disturbing movie. With the new film, the only innuendos are the music. Nothing really suggests what the original did. In my opinion, that takes away from the idea of it. It creates more of an awkward, innocent reaction.
It was clearly made to be friendlier to its viewers. However, it ruins the art that "Rocky Horror" originally had. With the sexual music, but no behavior to back it up, it seems rather awkward and one-sided.
For someone who gets offended by the original or thinks it's just a bit too much for you, this is definitely for you. But for the die-hard Rocky fans, and those who appreciate risqué humor, I suggest the original. It's a much preferred experience.
