The Indiana-born artist, and Hall of Fame member behind hits such as "Jack and Diane," "Hurts so Good" and "R.O.C.K. in the USA," John ‘Cougar’ Mellencamp will perform at John R. Emens Auditorium at 7:30 p.m April 12.
On his Plain Spoken Tour of 2015, Mellencamp will be performing songs from his 22nd album and all of the fan favorites.
Robert Willey, director and associate professor of Music Media Production at Ball State, called Mellencamp "Indiana's answer to Bruce Springsteen," noting the similarities in both artists' American-style rock.
"He is Indiana's most famous musician, after Michael Jackson who was born in Gary," Willey said. "Unlike Michael, he stuck around and wrote a lot of hit songs."
Lauren Lykins, a social studies education major and art major, said she enjoys John Mellencamp’s music, but the price of tickets was an issue.
“I just really enjoy his music,” she said. “Going would be mostly for my mom, but I wish I could go.”
According to Emens’ website, tickets for adults are anywhere from $39 to $115.
The cost didn’t deter everyone, though. As of April 11, tickets were sold out.
Kristi Chambers, the assistant director of marketing and communications for Emens, said that the auditorium holds 3,309 seats, with an orchestra pit of 72 seats.
Chambers is going to be among the crowd cheering Mellencamp on. She is a big fan of Mellencamp, and enjoys the rock and country mix of his music.
“Mellencamp is an Indiana native, as most know,” she said, “but he hasn’t toured in Indiana recently … and has never been to Muncie or Ball State at all.”
Chambers said she is very excited for this “timeless artist” perform Tuesday.
