Ball State played its final two regular-season matches at John E. Worthen Arena this past weekend. Since the Cardinals cannot drop lower than fourth in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, however, they guaranteed at least one more home match in the MIVA quarterfinals.
On March 25, Ball State took on No. 1 Ohio State, and while the Cardinals went into set number three tied 1-1, the Buckeyes would eventually prevail, winning 3-1. Ball State returned to action the following night for its Senior Night match against McKendree. All three of its seniors started the match, and the Cardinals won 3-1.
Baseball
Mid-American Conference play is officially in full swing, and after a 2-1 weekend at Miami, Ball State is tied for second in the MAC West Division. Ball State's pitching effort is what helped the team elevate past Miami, particularly from junior right-handed pitcher Zach Plesac.
After dropping the first game on March 25, Plesac came out the following day to throw nine shutout innings, which included 11 strikeouts and only two hits. The Cardinals will return to action on March 29 when they travel to instate opponent Valparaiso.
Softball
Ball State softball also opened its conference season on the road against Miami, dropping all three games. While the loss puts Ball State tied for last in the MAC West Division, only two teams in the division were able to come away with more than one win over the weekend.
Miami got off to early leads in each of the three games, scoring at least one run in the bottom of the first. In March 27's doubleheader, the Redhawks' runs each came by way of a home run in the first. The Cardinals will return for their first home game of the season against Ohio on April 1.
Women's tennis
For nearly a month and a half, the Ball State women's tennis team has not faced defeat. The team's winning streak extended to 12 this weekend as Ball State took down Western Michigan 4-3 and Northern Illinois 5-2, both at home.
Ball State is now sitting atop the MAC with a 15-2 overall record to go with its 2-0 conference start. The Cardinals will take on the Miami Redhawks on April 1 and travel to Eastern Michigan on April 3.
Men's tennis
Ball State lost its second straight match on March 25 to MAC rival Binghamton 5-2. The loss drops Ball State to fifth place in the MAC as it boasts a 6-9 overall record along with a 1-2 conference record. Ball State travels to Dekalb, Ill., on April 2 to take on Northern Illinois (14-6, 2-1 MAC), then non-conference rival Illinois (9-8, 1-2 Big Ten).
