March is Disability Awareness Month, and Alliance for Disability Awareness and the Disability Services Office are hosting a month of events to spread awareness.

They are partnering with the Governor's Council on People with Disabilities to organize the month. The theme this year is "Inclusion is within everyone's ability."

Film series

Every Wednesday at 7 p.m., they will show a different film highlighting a disability. The movies will be shown in L.A. Pittenger Student Center, room 306. There will be discussion after the film.

Wheelchair basketball and goalball

Learn to play wheelchair basketball at the Jo Ann Gora Student Wellness and Recreation Center. Wheelchairs will be provided for use.

Game dates:

  • March 1, March 15 and March 29

On March 22, they will play goalball instead of wheelchair basketball. Goalball is designed for blind athletes. Teams try to throw a ball with bells embedded in it into the opponents' goal, and the players must use the sound of the bell to judge the position of the ball. Players are blindfolded during the game so the sighted players can be equal with the blind players.

Awareness tables

The Alliance for Disability Awareness is setting up tables in the Student Center Tally to raise awareness for disabilities. ADA will be giving away brochures, stickers and pins.

The tables will be set up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each of these days:

  • March 1, March 2, March 14 and March 15

Speakers and panel discussions

  • RJ Mitte will be speaking as a part of the Excellence in Leadership speaker series at 7:30 p.m. March 21 at Pruis Hall. He'll be talking about being an actor in "Breaking Bad" with a disability.
  • There will be a Women with Disabilities panel discussion at 11 a.m. March 22 in the Student Center forum room. Several female students with disabilities will be speaking about their life and school experiences.

Diversity pledge

Sign a pledge to be diverse with ADA, the Latino Student Union and other multicultural student groups. Sign the pledge at these locations:

  • March 21 at the Scramble Light from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • March 22 at the Atrium from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Diversity march

  • At 5 p.m. on March 24, there will be the first Diversity March on campus down McKinley Avenue

Spread the word to end the word

  • ADA is co-sponsoring Best Buddies' week of events from March 21-25 to try to get rid of the word "retard."
