It can be tough to remember everything to pack and plan while traveling. Keep these tips in mind for a safe and happy Spring Break.

Planning and Packing

"Make sure that you have everything planned out before you go so that you know what you’re going to need as far as clothes and items that you’ll need once you get there." - Allison Gregory, a study abroad peer adviser

Though planning everything you need is essential, many worry about packing everything they'll need. Gregory said depending on where you're traveling, some items can wait to be bought once you get there. Doing this will also save space and lessen your suitcase load.

Money Matters

Make sure if you're traveling out of the country you know what kind of currency you'll be needing and the exchange rate, Gregory said.

According to Google Finance, one American Dollar is equal to .92 euros, 17.39 pesos, 1.34 Canadian dollars, .72 British pounds and 121.21 Jamaican dollars.

Driving

"Buckle up, take turns behind the wheel, and whoever sits shotgun should stay awake to keep the driver company. Keep your phone out of sight while driving to avoid distraction. The text can wait." - Elizabeth Peeler, a health educator at Ball State.

If you're taking a long car ride, it can be tempting to use a cellphone to change music and check social media. Keeping your phone out of sight will lessen that urge. Also, make sure your parents have the phone numbers of the people you're traveling with in case your phone dies or breaks. Changing drivers on long car rides is also important so the driver does not become too tired to focus on the road without tunnel vision.

Sun Exposure

"Be sure to use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and apply 30 minutes before going outside, cloudy or sunny. Reapply every two hours. Wear sunglasses and protective clothing such as wide-brim hats and long-sleeved shirts." - Peeler

Many don't realize the sun can still be harmful even on the not-so-sunny spring days. According to American Scientist, a thing called cloud enhancement happens when UV rays reflect off the sides of cumulus clouds, concentrating the radiation.

Drinking

"The combination of alcohol and sun exposure can equal a bad sunburn and an even worse hangover. Sun maximizes the effects of alcohol, so take it slow and stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Call a sober friend or taxi before you leave home. Drinking and driving don’t mix." - Peeler

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the consumption of alcohol paired with sun exposure increases the chance of getting a heat stroke. Heat stroke can occur rapidly, and those who have been affected should seek medical attention immediately.

Some symptoms are headaches, dizziness, disorientation, sluggishness, flushed but not sweaty skin, seizures and loss of consciousness. Heat stroke can be prevented by drinking lots of fluids, protecting skin from the sun and taking frequent breaks from activities for drinks and a bit of shade.
