Delegate allocation is a tricky thing to understand for those who don’t study politics. In a nutshell, when we caucus or vote in primaries, we are assigning delegates to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions to vote for a candidate. These assignments are based on both the way we vote and the allocation laws in a state. The Democrats are pretty simple. They have proportional allocation in all states. The GOP, on the other hand, has fairly complicated options for what a state can do. The graphic below shows how these rules differ from state to state.
