Another Super Bowl has come and gone, and, along with the game, another wave of creative commercials. Here is a list of the top 5 Super Bowl commercials from Super Bowl 50.
1. Mountain Dew Kickstart - Puppy Monkey Baby
This is one of those ads where we get some information about the product, but mostly listen to a fantastic little jingle that is sure to make a home inside the ears. It begins in a cramped room with three bored looking guys when a monkey-armed, pug-faced baby flips down the wall, chanting, “Puppy monkey baby.” It’s holding a cooler of Mountain Dew Kickstarts and when it hands them all an ice-cold Mountain Dew Kickstart, the night gets really crazy.
2. Skittles - Steven Tyler
Creativity never stops when it comes to Skittles. This commercial, which comes from the creators of the “Skittles-pox,” showcases Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, witnessing the reveal of his portrait made from, guess what … Skittles. Not only that, but the portrait sings “Dream On!”
3. Audi – Starman
There is a star man waiting on Earth. This commercial tells the story of a retired astronaut who once explored the stars and made a journey to the moon. In his old age, he seems to have lost excitement in life as he appears bored and unplugged. A younger man gives him the keys to a brand new Audi R8, and as he starts the car and pushes the ignition, we can hear the subtle sound of a late David Bowie strumming in the back with flashes of rocket thrusters igniting; and then comes the beautiful sound of the 205 mph Audi engine. As the man drives the car, it brings a smile back to his withered face. It ends with the message, “Choosing the moon brings out the best in us.”
4. Doritos – Ultrasound
Doritos never fails to deliver a quick punch to the funny bone. We are set in a hospital room with a doctor and a husband and wife. The wife is having an ultrasound to view the image of her baby for the first time, but to her surprise, the husband is more interested in his Doritos. Unfortunately for her, her baby is also more interested in Doritos. So much more interested, that the baby jumpstarts his own birth just to get to a bag!
5. T-Mobile – Drake
Surprised to see a cellular company on the list? Well, this T-Mobile ad shows some clever wit and use of puns. Drake is filming a music video for his hit song “Hotline Bling” – you know, the one where he shows off his stellar phone talking dance move? However, he is interrupted by some cellular company executives who have some, well, changes they want him to make. They include talking about hidden fees in his song, how you cannot stream music without data charges, and also how you cannot make calls to Mexico or Canada. Drake, with a large grin on his face, replies “I told a lot of people I’m from Canada. I lied.” Classic Drake.
