Rumors surrounding a possible Red Dead Redemption sequel are flying once more since Take-Two Initiative CEO Strauss Zelnick announced that the game series is a “permanent franchise.”
The most prominent rumor, according to news outlets such as Christian Today and MNR Daily, is that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be announced at this year’s E3 convention in Los Angeles. The game will supposedly feature Jack Marston, son of Redemption’s protagonist John Marston, and will be called Red Dead Revolution.
However, the official websites of Take-Two Initiative and subsidiary company Rockstar Games have remained eerily silent on the issue. E3’s website offers no solutions, either.
Speculation soon grew to include a supposed sequel called Red Dead Redemption: Legends of the West, according to Reddit user AnonDN1978. According to the user, the sequel would actually be a prequel set at least a decade before its predecessor. It would feature two characters from Redemption, Seth and Irish, as playable characters, with a third customizable character acting as their go-between.
Other rumors have included that the sequel would be set in Japan (odd, for a game based in the American Old West) and that it will feature an even larger map. It has also been speculated that Redemption may be coming to Xbox One and that the sequel, whatever it may be, will be released October 16.
But while the rumors continue to circulate, neither developer Rockstar Games nor its parent company Take-Two Initiative has revealed anything concerning a sequel to its open world Western. Red Dead may indeed be a franchise, but that guarantees nothing about a sequel except that there will—eventually—be one.
Red Dead Redemption, sequel to the 2004 Red Dead Revolver, was released in 2010. It won awards such as VGX Best Game and VGX Game of the Year. The game focuses around John Marston, a reformed outlaw in the last days of the Old West, as he tries to redeem himself for his violent past.
E3, where the sequel to Red Dead Redemption will supposedly be announced, takes place June 14-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.
