The FAFSA deadline is coming up on March 10, and Gov. Mike Pence has declared Feb. 21-27 “Financial Aid Awareness Week” to help students and families with filing the FAFSA.

On Feb. 21, financial aid experts at 42 sites throughout Indiana offered students help filing for financial aid during an event called College Goal Sunday.

John McPherson, Ball State executive director of financial aid and scholarships, said it’s important that students remember to file.

“The FAFSA is the primary application for most federal, state and many institutional financial aid funds,” McPherson said. “March 10 is extremely important as that is the filing deadline for many programs. A student may file after March 10, but potential eligibility will be limited.”

Indiana’s FAFSA deadline is always in early March, which Delaney McCaslin, a freshman history and archeology major, said is a good time.

“I think it’s a reasonable deadline because it’s a set date in March every year, which makes it easier to remember,” McCaslin said.

But the March deadline may be a little too early for some people. Joe Clabough, a junior political science major, said it would be more convenient in April.

“I think it could be a little later to better coincide with tax season,” Clabough said.

Students can fill out their FAFSAs without having their taxes done, but the information needs to be updated after taxes are turned in.

Although FAFSAs can be completed after the deadline, the award may be significantly lower than what it would be if it was filled out before March 10.
