Students interested in participating can get transportation from the Muncie Red Cross office. More information can be found on RCC's BennyLink.

Students will be able to help raise awareness about home fires on Dec. 12.

The Home Fire Campaign is a program sponsored by the Red Cross, and Ball State organization Red Cross Cardinals will help out during it. Any student, even those who are not members of RCC, can attend the event.

Although deaths from fires in the U.S. is down 19.5 percent from 2002, there were still more than one million deaths in 2011, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

In Indiana, there have been 56 home fire fatalities in 2015, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Three were in Delaware County.

Volunteers participating in the campaign go door-to-door, educating families about fire safety and installing free fire alarms. In the last few campaigns, the group has averaged 200 homes.

Caleb Hathaway, a junior exercise science major, has participated in the program since the beginning of the year.

“Seeing the smiling faces of the community members and being able to educate them is well worth it,” Hathaway said. “This is a very important program. Not very many people throughout the community have smoke alarms.”

Brittaney Hall, a senior health education and promotion major, has also participated in the program several times. She said it is rewarding to be a part of such an event, and there are benefits for the volunteers as well.

“Volunteering for this event is fun because you get the opportunity to meet new people by being put into teams with other students and members of the community to collectively spread awareness about fire safety," Hall said. "Volunteering also gives you experience that can help build your resume, ultimately leading to a rewarding career path."
