One of the best seasons in Ball State soccer history came to an end after it lost in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.
The Cardinals went 14-3-2 during the course of the regular season, dropping only one match to a MAC opponent while going undefeated at home, prior to the 4-3 penalty kick loss to Akron Nov. 1.
Akron came into the match as the lowest ranked team in the tournament, going 6-12-2 on the season with a 3-8-conference record.
Throughout the match the Cardinals dominated, outshooting the Zips the entire time. None of the shots were able to find the back of the net, however.
Around the league, there was another match decided by penalty kicks. After a 2-2 tie in regular time, Buffalo was able to knock off Central Michigan, winning the penalty kick battle 3-1.
Western Michigan had the most dominating win of the day, beating the Toledo Rockets 3-0. Since they are the highest remaining seed, they will host the remainder of the tournament.
If the Cardinals would've won, they would have hosted the remainder of the tournament at Briner Sports Complex where they went undefeated this season.
