As a group of zombies ran through campus, they weren't running from humans trying to kill them. They were working to raise money for Global Brigades.

On Nov. 7, 43 zombies participated in Global Brigades' first Zombie Run. The purpose of the event was to prolong Halloween and fundraise for Global Brigades' 2016 medical and dental trip to Panama, said Jelena Petricevic, a senior pre-med, biology and chemistry major.

“I thought of the theme because my dad is obsessed with zombie stuff and there isn’t a zombie run in Muncie, the closest one is in Indianapolis,” Petricevic said. “I was thinking about quick fundraisers to get money for medications. The total cost of medications for a brigade is $42,000.”

In Panama, a completely student-run medical clinic will be set up. Another benefit was getting experience working with others in the group that will be working together in clinics, Petricevic said.

The winner of the race, senior organizational communications major Alex Romoser, was roped into participating by his friend Lance Winkler, a senior geographic information systems major. Winkler came in second.

“I decided to participate because I love the Walking Dead and zombies," Romoser said. "I’ve had some classes with people in Global Brigades and like what they’re doing."

Sophomore speech pathology major Cecily Smith and freshman speech pathology major Kayla Moyer said while they were confused why the zombie run was after Halloween, they both enjoyed the chance to dress up like zombies.

Moyer said it “keeps the [Halloween] spirit alive.”

“I would dress up as a zombie in the middle of the summer,” Moyer said.

Global Brigades President Kasey Burchett, a junior natural resources and environmental management major, said the club will definitely do the Zombie Run again.

“I thought it went awesome and I’m really happy with the turnout,” Burchett said.
