Across the pond, London certainly knows how to put on a tasteful show. For these Spring 2016 ready-to-wear collections, practicality and wearability seem to be a recurring theme. Definitely not New York, these London designers show us how it's done through classics with sharp tailoring and structure, a modern twist and intricate detail.
Don't let my American citizenship suggest any bias views of London fashion; I am a foreign style aficionado. Aside from the savvy accent, London fashionistas have a particular taste that every fashion-enthused American girl envies. Perhaps it's the simplicity of the seemingly effortless, yet chic outfits they pull together that is so intriguing to American fashionistas.
Normally straying away from trends, Burberry has one thing in common with New York this spring: neutral, silky slip dresses and easy trench coats. Who would've thought outerwear would be so prominent during the springtime? With these clean structural jackets trimmed with gold and regimental buttons, who cares if you're nearly breaking a sweat in the 60-70 degree weather? (Indiana: We'd be lucky to.)
Accompanying these statement pieces, the return of Burberry's nylon floppy backpacks is everything to be excited about. Unless you're not a broke college student, oo-ing and ah-ing at these trademark bags are about as far as you'll get.
On another runway, Topshop Unique takes a back road to the 1980s. Throwback suits with a modern twist, chunky knits and a retro pastel color scheme are just the essentials to this collection. Styled with big hair, bright lips and belts, Topshop reminds us how stylish those 80s yearbook photos actually are. Girls really do just want to have fun this spring.
The water may divide our countries, but in Sophia Webster's Spring 2016 collection, marine life connects fashionistas through creative, oceanic accessories. With long-legged mermaids, modeling vibrant, multi-strap sandals, you'd think Ms. Webster isn't serious. These bright and fun accessories with imprinted trademark slogans such as "Beach Baby" and "Naughty Cool" make for a fun and festive season—or beach trip. You decide.
With the perfect blend between classic and fun, London designers are making us eager to tread through the upcoming cold weather and give a shot at British fashion. After all, they do share boy bands. London, you're quite the fashion city, but (cue the bias) New York currently holds the crown.
