Dining eliminates part-time employment for non-student employees

Dining employees are adjusting to the loss of non-student part-time workers and extended hours at several locations.

After dining eliminated part-time employment for non-student employees this summer, it gave all current employees the chance to go full time, and 30 chose to do so, said Jon Lewis, director of dining services. The university also created 47 new full-time positions, which were aimed at saving money within the department.

Many dining locations' hours, primarily in residence halls, were extended from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for this academic year. This changed the way weekend shifts are handled for dining employees.

Erica Hamilton, a junior social work major, worked at Woodworth Commons dining hall for her freshman and sophomore years but had to quit this year because the extended hours would have interfered with her participation in her sorority. Hamilton usually worked a Friday night shift until 8 p.m., but now that shift was extended to 9 p.m., which is when her sorority hosts events.

Instead, Hamilton had to find a new off-campus job during the first week of school.

Lewis said all employees were informed of the changes to schedules at the end of the 2014-15 academic year.
