The Ball State field hockey team was tied 1-1 with No. 10 Northwestern after a half, but the Wildcats scored two goals in the second half to knock off the Cardinals 3-1.

Northwestern defeated Ball State 3-0 the last time the teams met in 2013.

“I felt if they could be consistent and do the simple things really well we could at least try and knock Northwestern off a little bit and challenging them by getting in their heads a little bit," head coach Sally Northcroft said in a statement.

Trailing 1-0, the Cardinals evened the score with a goal off a penalty corner in the 21st minute. Redshirt senior Bianca Velez scored off an assist from Bryce Barnes and Lexi Kavanaugh.

Northwestern turned it up on offense following intermission, earning seven penalty corners and attempting 12 shots on goal. Ball State had five penalty corners and four shots on goal, all coming in the first half.

“It’s only a matter of seconds and the whole game can change," Northcroft said. "Northwestern is a highly skilled and disciplined team so they were able to absorb the pressure, but I think that the thing we did the best was just work unbelievably hard, kept things simple and looked out for our teammates.”

Junior Jordan Dues started in the goal for Ball State. She made six saves in the game for a .667 save percentage.

With the loss, Ball State falls to 0-5 on the season. The Cardinals will return to action on Sept. 11 when they travel to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes, then return home on Sept. 12 to battle with Appalachian State.

“We’re working on it, and we still have a fair ways to go, but it’s certainly getting better," Northcroft said.
