You can keep your head down and avoid eye contact, but you can’t dodge the inevitable.
Some professors are going to ask students to introduce themselves to the class. Often, they’ll require standard information, like names, majors and years. But sometimes they’ll throw in that age-old request dreaded by introverts and slow-thinkers alike: “Tell us something about yourself.”
Here are some subject suggestions for a stress-free reply:
1. Favorite things
Everyone has their likes and dislikes, so it’s easy to name a preferred television show, music genre or animal that will satisfy the teacher’s question. Plus, someone in class may like the same thing. It could open up an opportunity to meet a new person.
2. Extracurricular Activities
Even if you haven’t joined a Ball State club or organization yet, say which ones you’d like to get involved with. If you’re an active member, this could be an opportunity to inform or recruit others.
3. Summer adventures
Use this as your chance to brag about a super cool vacation, internship or accomplished goal that you experienced this summer. For example, maybe you re-read all the Harry Potter books for the fourth time. Okay, maybe hold off on revealing that tidbit.
4. Life goals
Goals can go hand-in-hand with your major, or they can be something different, like hiking the Appalachian Trail or writing a novel. Whatever it is, it can feel good to talk about future dreams.
5. High school history
Some people wouldn’t want to talk about their hometown activities, but if you did something noteworthy, don’t be afraid to tell others.
