Junior Riley Bae has the room laughing while performing her monologue during the Vagina Monologues rehearsal.
Feminist for Action and the Multicultural Center are presenting the Vagina Monologues this Saturday, March 28, in Pruis Hall at 7 p.m.
The monologues talk about the empowerment of the vagina. The girls involved in the show bring up controversial subjects that may not always be talked about such as:
- Sexuality
- Social stigma on rape and abuse
- Masturbation
- Interracial relationships
“The themes range from funny monologues to sad monologues, but I think they are relatable,” Nicole Mansfield, the director of the Vagina Monologues, said.
Because it’s women’s week, Mansfield said the show would address violence against women. This is an issue that the YWCA, a women’s shelter in Muncie, has been dealing with for years within its programs.
“We have mandatory classes that all the women that live here have to attend to help teach them how to break that cycle of violence generationally,” Nancy Beqhurt, YWCA representative, said. “We have anger management classes. We have domestic violence courtrooms.”
Mansfield said all proceeds made from the Vagina Monologues go to the YWCA to use toward items such as food, sheets, clothes and more. Beqhurt said the YWCA could not be more grateful.
“I think (the Feminist for Action group) shows wonderful civic attention to the community,” Beqhurt said.
This year the monologues will include two new monologues and a more visual aspect to it compared to the years latter.
“I think it’s going to be an eye-opening experience,” Mansfield said.
Mansfield directed a mini Vagina Interview on campus to help promote the Vagina Monologues this weekend. The Feminist for Action Group said the women they interviewed were shy to talk at first, but once the women got started there was no stopping them.
Tickets are five dollars and will be on sale for $5 until Friday in room 116 at the Student Center.
