This year, the university is looking for one new student to represent the entire student body to the nine-member Ball State Board of Trustees.
The student member of the Board of Trustees is a full-fledged member with equal voting power and participation as the other eight members.
The board is responsible for the operation of the university, which includes borrowing money and other finances, defining admission standards, granting degrees and diplomas, and setting fees, charges, fines and penalties. He or she also represents the student viewpoint on higher education in Indiana and Ball State.
The process to find the next student representative to the Ball State Board of Trustees begins with a candidate informational forum at 6 p.m. Thursday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 303.
There are two Ball State alumni, one student and six members appointed at large. All members serve a four-year term, except for the student, who serves a two-year term.
Kyle Pierce, a junior political science major, has served on the board since July 1, 2013. His term ends this year on June 31.
“One of the greatest opportunities on the board is you get to see how the president and leaders work,” Pierce said. “I’ve gotten to see how President Ferguson leads, and I will be able to take what I learned from him and others with me into the workforce.”
Indiana’s governor makes all appointments to the Board of Trustees.
However, the appointment process begins with interviews from Feb. 24 to Feb. 26 with a student selection committee, followed by an interview with the president and his cabinet and finally an interview with the governor’s office, he said.
The governor has the final say in who is appointed based on the interviews, he added.
The position is open to any Ball State student who is enrolled full-time during their two-year term, is a resident of Indiana, has a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and is in good standing with the university.
Pierce added a general quality for the position is to like Ball State.
“You have to be someone who likes to talk about Ball State, because you will be learning a lot about it,” he said.
What pushed Pierce to pursue the position was a presentation that former President Jo Ann Gora gave to the Student Government Association.
“President Gora came into the senate and gave a presentation on how the university was funded and operated,” he said. “I really liked that, and I really wanted to help out, even in a small way.”
SGA and University Senate differ from the Board of Trustees because the board focuses on implementing policies and changes, where the two former groups focus on coming up with ideas and plans to submit to the administration. The board puts the plans of SGA and University Senate into the context of the university’s operations, Pierce said.
Applications for the positions are available on SGA’s website.
