A number of students were victim to an armed robbery that resulted in an arrest Feb. 7.
According to the University Police Department summary, Marcus Hanyard was arrested that night on charges of robbery, escape from detention, pointing a firearm, possession of marijuana and resisting law enforcement.
The robbery occurred in the 900 block of Carson around 10:10 p.m.
UPD Officer Rhonda Clark said after the robbery, some of the victims flagged down an officer on Carson and reported the robbery. They said the suspect came into the home with a gun and demanded cellphones and money.
Hanyard was found quickly after the report and arrested in the 1500 block of University Avenue, Clark said. The suspect then tried to get away from the arresting officers behind the UPD station.
A Black Ruger SR22 pistol was taken into evidence from the suspect, along with five cellphones, drugs and drug equipment and a $20 bill, the report said.
Clark did not want to speculate on the suspect’s motives. Hanyard is not a Ball State student.
There was no alert sent out to students after the robbery because an arrest was made, Clark said.
“There was no on-going threat to the university due to the timing it happened and [because] the suspect was found quickly," Clark said.
