Park Hall has been open for nearly eight years and is the only residence hall to not have a sign identifying the building.

Park Hall Council President Anthony Cook reached out to Student Government Association Senator James Wells about writing legislation to get a sign for Park Hall.

The only signage Park Hall has is a plaque in the lobby dedicated to Don Park, after whom the building was named, Cook said.

Don Park said he had no idea that there was not a sign for the building named in his honor until recently.

“Within a week, an alumnus and a student came up and pointed it out. I said, ‘You’re kidding me,’” Park said.

He said he doesn’t know why this was not realized much earlier.

“It just seems fair to treat Park Hall on the same level of equality,” Wells said.

He said all residence halls should be recognized properly.

At the SGA meeting on Wednesday, the senate voted on passing a resolution asking the university to place a sign.

It was only minutes later when Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities, called Wells to tell him that two signs would be placed on two sides of Park Hall.

Kenyon said facilities had no idea Park Hall did not have a sign.

“No one had brought it to our attention,” he said.

Though the legislation has no purpose, Wells said it is still fulfilling getting a job done and listening to students, even if it was just for a sign.

“It feels good to know that something as simple as this isn’t going to be overlooked,” Cook said. “It makes me excited to know that there is going to be a sign outside my building now.”

Jonah Katz, SGA senator and resident assistant at Park Hall, was a family orientation leader last summer.  He said families would ask what that building was or where the sign was.

“Signage is helpful, especially for incoming families,” he said. “It would make summer orientation leaders’ jobs much easier and for people in general.”

Kenyon said two signs will be placed within the next two weeks.

Park is expected to be at the hall on Sunday to attend a celebration of the eighth anniversary of the building.
