Ball State goes 1-1 on 2nd day of Tiger Invitational

After dropping its first two games of the Tiger Invitational, the Ball State softball team ended the second day of the tournament with a 1-1 record.

Ball State defeated Mercer 9-1 in five innings in its first game of the day, and then was defeated by Winthrop 10-1 in the second game.

The Cardinals used the long ball to pick up runs against the Bears, with three home runs in the game. Senior Jessica Craft, junior Emily Dabkowski and junior Selena Reyna all homered.

Reyna had two hits to go along with three RBIs, and Dabkowski added three RBIs as well.

Junior Nicole Steinbach pitched a complete game for Ball State. She allowed just one run, which was unearned. She struck out six while walking one.

In game two, the Cardinals were outscored 9-1 in the last two innings on their way to a five-inning defeat. Ball State mustered two hits offensively in the loss.

Junior Sammi Cowger's RBI groundout in the fifth produced Ball State's lone run.

Cowger pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits. She struck out four and walked two. Sophomore Jocelyn Rivera and freshman Carolyn Wilmes finished the game in relief.

The Cardinals are now 4-4 overall on the season. They will close out play at the Tiger Invitational Feb. 14 as they take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers at 10:45 a.m.
