The Ball State men’s basketball team received a game-high 17 points from freshman Jeremie Tyler, but ultimately suffered a 70-57 loss at No. 19 San Diego State.
“I felt like we really competed. I told the guys that in the locker room,” Ball State head coach James Whitford said. “I thought we came out nervous … we dug ourselves a hole early.”
The Cardinals found themselves down double-digits with just over eight minutes in the first half and trailed 36-26 at halftime.
Ball State cut the deficit to eight on a layup by center Matt Kamieniecki with 14:07 remaining in the second half, but it was the closest the Cardinals got.
Kamieniecki finished with 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
San Diego State used its height advantage on the glass, scoring 18-second chance points on 12 offensive rebounds. The Aztecs also forced 22 Ball State turnovers, with 12 coming in the game’s first 10 minutes.
The Cardinals shot 41 percent from the field on 19-of-46 field goals, while the Aztecs shot 44 percent on 23-of-52. Ball State made four three pointers, three by Tyler and one by point guard Zavier Turner.
As a team, Ball State shot 15-of-21 from the foul line. Turner went 5-of-6 and forward Rocco Belcaster made 4-of-5.
“We’re going to make mistakes,” Whitford said. “It’s a matter of us learning to compete and stay together … I thought we did that tonight.”
Ball State drops to 3-6 on the season with the loss, and will look to snap a three-game losing streak Dec. 28 against Longwood. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Worthern Arena.
