Premium cable network HBO will launch a stand-alone online service in 2015. The new service will make HBO programming available online without having a cable subscription.
"It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO," said Richard Plepler, CEO of HBO.
With the number of households with only an internet connection growing Plepler said, “That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped.”
Plepler summed the new service up by saying, “So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”
HBO currently has a streaming service called HBO GO. This service is available on computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and other internet connected devices. However, HBO GO is only available with a cable subscription of HBO.
HBO will be joining the list of companies that have an online streaming service that does not include a cable subscription. This list of companies that already have streaming services include: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, WWE, and UFC. All of these companies have come out with successful streaming services that cost less than $10 a month.
No name, price, or exact release date has been announced for the new HBO service.
