Randy Howard

Ball State's treasurer and vice president for business affairs announced today that he will move on to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Ball State announced Howard's move in a campus wide email, saying he will become senior vice president and chief financial officer at the Florida campus Sept. 2.

Embry-Riddle is a non-profit private university specializing in aviation and aerospace with two campuses, one in Florida and one in Arizona. The Florida campus has approximately 4,600 undergraduates.

"This was a difficult decision for me," Howard said in a statement. "Ball State is a very special university, and I am appreciative for the opportunities I have had to contribute to its success. At the same time, I am looking forward to new challenges and opportunities at Embry-Riddle, a very distinctive and innovative university in its own right."

He joined Ball State as associate vice president for business affairs in 2006. By July 2009, he became vice president for business affairs.

During his time as treasurer, the university became a victim of fraud for a total of $13 million, starting in 2008. Howard is currently overseeing the situation as the university looks to recover, something that his successor will have to be ready to deal with.

Interim President Terry King said the search for Howard's replacement will begin immediately, according to the email.

Rick Hall, Board of Trustees chairman, praised Howard in the statement, saying Howard had contributed to the university's efficiency and success.

"I'm sorry to see Randy move on," Hall said. "... I know he is excited about this new opportunity, which builds on his background in the Air Force as well as his accomplishments here. I want to thank him for his service and wish him the best in his new endeavor."

According to the Embry-Riddle job posting, the senior vice president and chief financial officer is responsible for overseeing a budget of $300 million and is the spokesperson for the university in relation to its finances, audits and investment committees of the board.
