Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler took to Twitter this evening to show his disappointment that the Federal Emergency Management Agency denied Indiana’s petition for federal aid.

“FEMA SHOULD BE ASHAMED,” he tweeted at 5:58 p.m.

Muncie requested aid for the snow shelters, plowing and emergency services used.

“I’m extremely disappointed,” Tyler said to the Daily News. “I know the state is appealing that decision. I’m hoping FEMA reconsiders their decision. We spent a tremendous amount of dollars keeping our streets safe, providing safe shelters and keeping our community safe during extreme weather conditions.”

Tyler said the city spent thousands trying to keep additional services open and available to the public.

“I’m not complaining at all about it, and if they deny us, then that’s fine,” he said. “I would do it again tomorrow for the people. I would think Washington, through FEMA, would reconsider – it’s the right thing to do.”

At an Optimist Club meeting, Tyler was asked whether he thought that the FEMA denial had anything to do with Indiana having a Republican governor.

“These type of issues can’t be about who belongs to which party,” he said. “It’s about what’s right.”
