Congressman Luke Messer will be the Spring Commencement speaker.

The main ceremony starts at 10 a.m. Saturday on the Arts Terrace, or at Worthen Arena if there is inclement weather.

Messer is a Republican who represents Indiana's 6th Congressional District, which includes Delaware County.

According to the press release, he also will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from the university.

This won't be the first visit from Messer this academic year. In September, he presented the university with the U.S. Department of Commerce's Export Achievement Certificate for Ball State's international student population growth.

President Jo Ann Gora and Messer also introduced the Congressional Leadership Academy for high school juniors in Indiana's 6th Congressional District. The one-day event was April 5.

Messer and Gora have worked together since he was a state legislator on a Higher Education policy committee. He previously told the Daily News that he has had a "very solid and working relationship" with Gora and that her emphasis on immersive learning gives students "an invaluable head start on others entering the 21st century workplace."

During the federal government shutdown, Messer met with the Ball State football team in October at the U.S. Capitol.

The congressman was elected in 2012 and currently serves on the House Committees on the Budget, Foreign Affairs and Education and the Workforce.

Messer, a sixth generation Hoosier, graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., and received a law degree from Vanderbilt University, according to his website.

Previous Ball State commencement speakers include Sutton Foster, a Tony Award-winning actress; Steven Inskeep, NPR's "Morning Edition" co-host; Steve Kroft, CBS's "60 Minutes" correspondent; Richard Linnehan, a NASA astronaut; alumna Angela Ahrendts, Burberry CEO and future Apple senior vice president; and former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar.
