Splitting a pair of games in the opening day of the Buffalo Wild Wings Invitational, the Ball State softball team moved to a 4-1 overall record Sunday.
The Cardinals dropped a 4-5 loss to Virginia Tech at the start of the tournament. A home run and centerfield hit by the Hokies in the seventh inning closed out the morning game. Audrey Bickel had two RBI’s while Taylor Rager and Emily Dabkowski had the other two. Runners who scored included Jenny Gilbert, Briana Evans, and Dabkowski with two.
Taking advantage of George Mason’s inability to bring runners around the bases, the Cardinals generated a win, ending the day with a 2-0 win against the Patriots.
Though the Cardinals did not get their bats going until late in the game, Rager and Bickel each had an RBI in the sixth inning to seal the win. Gilbert tied the overall record for most runs scored in MAC history, after being walked and brought home after a triple by Rager.
Kelsey Schifferdecker snagged her third win of the season with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Cardinals finish play in the invitational at 2 p.m. Monday with a match versus host USC Upstate.
