Indiana superintendent of public education stressed the importance of students focusing on equality and student-centered accountability during a conference on campus Tuesday night.
Glenda Ritz and Danielle Shockey, deputy superintendent, said students of all backgrounds should have the same opportunity to receive a quality education.
Ritz said the education department works to create a system for students focused on equality and student-centered accountability and stressed to future teachers to “imagine the possibilities with the kids you have in the classroom, and go make them happen.”
She is currently working on the State Commission on Improving the Status of Children where she focuses on underprivileged children.
At the first meeting of the commission, she said several speakers ahead of her quoted statistics about student poverty, incarceration and poor health.
“I don’t need to share my statistics because all of your statistics are sitting in our classrooms,” Ritz said when her turn came to speak.
John Jacobson, dean of the Teachers College, said Ritz spoke at Ball State to emphasize “it’s all about helping students achieve their potential.”
“If there was one point that I would want them to take away,” Ritz said. “It is being a strong student advocate.”
Ritz, a Ball State alumna, said everything changed for her when she left to college.
“[Ball State is] the noted place to become a teacher,” she said.
By being involved and getting excited about her purpose in life, Ritz said she blossomed at Ball State.
“You really don’t get excited about learning until you have a purpose for it,” she said. “I would urge students to find what their passion is going to be and then go about getting it.”
