WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Organizers of the Purdue University Dance Marathon are celebrating breaking the $1 million fundraising mark for the weekend’s event.
Organizers said more than 2,000 Purdue students brought in just more than $1 million in donations for the Saturday and Sunday fundraiser for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. That’s nearly double what the event collected last year.
Dance marathon president Stephanie Nitschmann was in tears as she told the Journal & Courier that she was overwhelmed by the result and grateful to the students who took part.
During the marathon, students participated in a line dance, listened to Riley hospital families talk about their experiences and watched a talent show featuring Riley patients. The Purdue event has grown from raising $1,500 when it was first held in 2005.
