Members of the Muncie Exchange Club created the field as a community service project to not only remember the men and women who gave their lives 12 years ago, but to also honor everyone who has served the country, as well as those who are continuing to serve.

The Muncie Exchange Club partnered with the Minnetrista Cultural Center to host the Flag of Honor Field from Sept. 4-11.

The group has been raising funds and sponsorship for the project all year.

Every weekend at the Minnetrista Farmers Market, members of the advertised that anyone could purchase a flag to place in the field in honor of a loved one for $30.

After the closing ceremony held Wednesday afternoon, people who purchased flags were encouraged to find them and take them home.

President Rebecca Gill said a total of 700 flags were placed in the field by the event’s closing ceremony Wednesday evening.

“It was an amazing sight to see all of those flags flying,” Gill said. “It was breathtaking.”

The group plans to hold the event again next year but hopes to have 1,000 in the field.

All of the money raised goes to local charities supported by the Exchange Club, including organizations that promote youth activities, community service, child abuse awareness and, of course, patriotism.
