After building a comfortable lead, the Ball State field hockey team shut out Vermont 3-0 on Saturday. The Cardinals improved their record to 5-4.
Redshirt sophomore Bianca Velez led Ball State with two goals. Junior Tori Widrick played facilitator with three assists, and one of them resulted in a goal scored by sophomore Allie White.
The Cardinals played defensively, committing three penalties on the day. Sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Henley made one save as she faced five shots from Vermont.
“We try to fight hard and play together,” Velez said on Ball State’s commitment to defense. “It’s starting to connect now as the season goes on.”
Head coach Beth Maddox said she had the privilege of having her former coach Beth Anders watch the game from the press box.
Anders coached Maddox from 2000-2005 at Old Dominion University, where Maddox was a four-year letter winner.
“I was more excited for my girls more than anything.” Maddox said. “I was excited about my coach getting to see what I see in them.”
Ball State will travel to face Mid-American Conference opponent Central Michigan University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
