John Huffer, Ball State photo services coordinator, died Thursday after a heart attack earlier in the week. He was 54.

Huffer was a Muncie resident and graduated from Ball State in 1982, where he earned his degree in photojournalism. He was married to his wife, Pam, for 27 years.

Huffer is survived by his wife and his two daughters, Jordan, 25 and a sophomore photojournalism major, and Emily, 22.

Huffer was a photographer for the university for more than 30 years and began his career at Ball State shortly after graduating. In his career, he took photos of university events and people.

Huffer won several awards for his work. He was twice named national photographer of the year by the University Photographers Association of America and also won the Meritorious Service Award by Ball State.

Huffer also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Technology, where he taught a digital photography class.

He volunteered as a judge in photography for 4-H Club and volunteered to take photographs for various organizations, such as the Riley Hospital for Children.

Tom Taylor, vice president for Enrollment, Marketing and Communications, sent an email to all students, faculty and staff after Huffer's death Thursday.

"His wonderful images of both the campus and the campus community have been an integral part of the university's marketing efforts and grace the walls of many of our facilities," Taylor said in the email. "He was a man of great talent, kindness and good humor. He will be sorely missed."

Huffer's memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Alumni Center.
