INDOT to suspend construction until Monday for Labor Day weekend

The Indiana Department of Transportation will suspend construction throughout the Labor Day weekend looking to save drivers travel time.

In an effort to reduce congestion, INDOT will cease most highway construction and maintenance starting Friday and will resume construction Monday, according to a press release.

They will also remove lane restrictions and barriers where possible.

This should help students looking to head back home over the long weekend, Mary Foster, an INDOT representative, said.

“We do it to increase mobility and safety,” Foster said. “Without the roads closed off and the workers out, it makes it safer for everyone.”

Additionally, the Indiana State Police will participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign, according to a press release.

Officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints to spot impaired drivers.

“The purpose of the enforcement campaign is to remove impaired drivers from Indiana roadways before they cause needless pain, suffering or death of innocent victims,” according to an email from the police.

Students returning to campus Monday will see lane restrictions on I-65 and I-70 through downtown Indianapolis ahead of a 59-day closure that begins Tuesday.
