Smokers at Ball State will have to find a new place to light up after the university’s board of trustees approved a campus-wide tobacco free policy effective on Aug. 1 on Friday.
The ban will include chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes and will eliminate all smoking sections on campus.
Vice President of Student Affairs Kay Bales said the smokers will be allowed to smoke in their vehicles with the windows up.
Bales recommended the policy to the Board of Trustees in February citing a task force created to evaluate the smoking policies on campus.
Two-thirds of students, faculty and staff polled said they would prefer a smoke-free campus, according to a survey conducted by the university in 2007.
Since 2007, the university has issued at least 200 citations under the current tobacco policy, allowing smoking only in designated areas on campus.
