The Ball State baseball team picked up a fourth consecutive victory on Tuesday. The win streak is the second-longest of the season for the Cardinals.
Inconsistency has haunted the team from the beginning of the 2013 schedule. They seem to be turning things around at the right time though.
A May 22 start date for the Mid-American Conference tournament is fast approaching. Ball State’s 12-10 record is fourth-best in the conference. More importantly, the Cardinals trail first-place Northern Illinois in the MAC-West by just two games.
Ball State will square off with Northern Illinois in a three-game series to close out the regular season, giving every game up to that point added significance.
Their most recent victory came against the Bowling Green Falcons. The 5-2 win came as a result of solid pitching through out the game.
Chris Lovejoy pitched six innings, and gave up just six hits and one earned run. It was Lovejoy's first win of the season.
Tyler Jordan relieved Lovejoy and pitched three innings to close the game. He allowed just one hit as he picked up his third save of the year.
Ball State will host Purdue at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cardinals’ defense will match up well with a struggling Boilermaker offense.
In their last five games, the Boilermakers have brought in more than two runs just once, and they were shut out by Iowa on May 4.
Ball State’s offense on the other hand, has been impressive at times in recent games. The team opened their first at-bat against Bowling Green with a strong rally.
An early 3-0 lead for the Cardinals came thanks to a successful opening inning at the plate. Ryan Spaulding, Sean Godfrey and Cody Campbell each advanced to load the bases. Blake Beemer and Billy Wellman each earned RBIs in the subsequent at-bats.
Campbell would score the third run of the inning after a throwing error by Bowling Green.
With a win over Purdue the Ball State baseball team would leave itself in good position to catch the Northern Illinois Huskies.
Losers of two-straight, the Huskies will play Eastern Michigan in a three-game series scheduled to begin on Friday.
