WOMEN'S GOLF: Ball State trails Kent State in MAC tournament

Cardinal finish strong, still trail after two rounds

Coming into the second round of the Mid-American Conference Championship, the women’s golf team trailed tournament leader Kent State by just five shots.

The Cardinals set a goal to score lower in round two than they did in the event’s opening round.

Through nine holes, improvement seemed unlikely. The team shot a horrendous front nine, recording 20 bogeys. Their score on the front nine was 19 shots worse than Kent State's.

“They always like to know how we’re doing, so I told them that we weren’t looking good,” head coach Katherine Mowat said. She was able to give her team a sense of urgency.

Ball State closed the day with what Mowat called “phenomenal golf” on the back nine.

With just five bogeys, and six birdies, the team was able to bounce back and reach their goal. Ball State’s team score of 304 was a four-shot improvement from yesterday’s mark.

Kent State, however, was able to improve their team-total by five strokes. The Golden Flashes now hold an eleven-shot advantage over the second-place Cardinals heading into the tournament’s third round.

Jenna Hague shot a four-over-par 76 in round two, bringing her two-day total to 148. Kent State’s Jennifer Ha was able to close the gap on Hague, and now holds a share of the tournament’s top spot.

Senior Autumn Duke sits one spot back from the leaders with her score of 151.

“Have we put it all together for a full 18? No, not yet.” Mowat said. But she believes that the team is very capable of doing so.

Play at the Longaberger Golf Club will continue Sunday with the third and final round.
