Ball State sophomore Jenna Hague leads the Mid-American Conference tournament after one round of play. The defending medalist scored an even-par 72, leading the Cardinals to a second place standing in the field of nine teams.
Kent State leads the MAC field with their first-round score of 303. Sitting at twenty over par, Ball State trails by just five strokes.
Head coach Katherine Mowat said that the team pulled together some “really solid golf” today. She believes that the course was good for the team, especially in comparison with the conditions they faced early this spring.
“The conditions were nice. The greens were extraordinarily fast, and that was a test,” Mowat said.
The 18th hole was no exception. The approach requires extra attention, as the green is heavily sloped and can quickly draw a ball off the putting surface.
Hague and senior Autumn Duke both knocked down birdies on that tricky 18th tin. Hague sunk a 20-foot putt that gave her sole possession of the leader board’s top spot. Duke’s birdie moved her to third overall, just two shots back from second place.
On the 17th, Hague posted a double bogey after a shot that simply got away from her. The birdie on 18 meant more than just position; it meant a positive mindset heading into the tournament’s second round.
Senior Zoe Camus shot an 80 on the day, and Meghan Perry tallied an 81. The two sit at 19th and 23rd, in the field of 45 golfers, respectively.
“Our team’s in nice position, but there still is a lot of golf left. We all know that tomorrow’s a big day for us, and we need to go and all shoot lower than what we shot today,” Hague said.
