The Ball State men’s tennis team defeated Buffalo 4-3 on Saturday to earn the Mid-American Conference regular season title. The victory brought the Cardinals overall record to 16-7 and a perfect 5-0 in the MAC.
This MAC regular season title is the first for the Cardinals since the 2006 season.
The Cardinals got off to a hot start against Buffalo (9-8, 3-1 MAC) by winning the doubles point convincingly. Sophomores Ray Leonard and Patrick Elliot defeated their opponents 8-2 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, seniors Cliff Morrison and Dalton Albert teamed up to get the point earning 8-2 victory for the Cardinals. Freshman Imanol Arcanada and Senior Alexandre Brym were leading 5-3 when their match was retired.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead after Dalton Albertin earned his second point of the day by defeating Buffalo sophomore Sebastian Ionescu 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 3 position.
Ball State won the match when junior Austin Smith and senior Alexandre Brym won their matches in the dungeon, as the players like to call it. The wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots meant that Ray Leonard’s match had no effect on the match outcome. He retired at the No. 1 position trailing 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (6-8) 2-1.
The victory means the Cardinals will be the No. 1 seed in the 2013 MAC tournament played Thursday through Saturday at Northern Illinois.
