INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana House committee appears poised to remove from a bill on school security a requirement that all public and charter schools to have an employee carrying a loaded gun during school hours.
House Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown tells The Associated Press that the "mandate isn't very popular." Brown's committee could consider Monday afternoon or Tuesday making changes to the proposal that another House panel approved last week.
Bill sponsor Rep. Jerry Torr of Carmel didn't propose the armed employees mandate and says such decisions would be better left to local school officials.
Indiana would become the first state to require armed school employees if the bill becomes law. Supporters of the requirement say it would lessen the vulnerability of schools to violent attacks.
