Students looking for a job or internship were able to gain free advice from professionals Tuesday during “Resumania.”
Camille Mason, assistant director of the Career Center, said students could learn how to construct an effective résumé and upload them onto the Cardinal Career Link system.
“Students need to tailor their résumés to fit the job,” Mason said. “Whatever the job outlines, you want to make sure you write your accomplishment statement to attest to the ability of your set skills so you can get the job.”
Mason said she expected 100 to 150 students to attend.
“We hope that students come to the Career Services office because we have so much to offer,” Mason said. “We help with interviewing, making portfolios, negotiating salaries and we also have a resource lab in our office with 2,000 books, in which students have access to for every major on this campus.”
Mason said students need to make sure their résumés are clear, effective and organized.
Senior dietetics major Korren Eiden said she learned key skills to get an internship and a future job.
“If you have a good résumé, you are going to stand apart from other applicants,” Eiden said.
Kristin Blume, a senior interpersonal communications major, said she is in the process of job searching and hopes “Resumania” will help her gain positive critiques on her résumé and show her what employers are looking for.
Jim McAtee, director of the Career Center, said students will be able to meet with their career advisers and build a relationship with them.
“We try to help students prepare for the job fair that will be going on next week,” McAtee said. “We want students to be aware of what it takes to have a good résumé.”
McAtee said the event will help students learn more about Cardinal Career Link, form a connection with professionals and know the key tips in having an effective résumé.
“The first tip is to think like an employer, by knowing what is important to them and having a skills-based résumé,” McAtee said.
Mason said students need to start job searching in their junior year and not limit themselves to being behind the computer. Networking with professionals is essential.
“Students need to gain work experience by doing internships and immersive learning courses,” Mason said. “Doing this will make your résumé stronger, so when it’s time for you to get the job, your résumé will be polished enough for them to even consider you.”
Sessions will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall A, and Thursday in Bracken Library room 104.
