The Cardinals may have fallen short to the Redhawks of Miami University 149-118 on Saturday morning, but the leadership coming from the veterans played the key role in the teams’ performances.
“Being the last dual meet, sometimes over the years what I have seen happen is they go into the last meet wanting to get it over with,” coach Bob Thomas said.
Though that was not the case for the Cardinals on the road in Oxford.
“I have to credit the seniors for that,” Thomas said of his seniors leading the team to match their season best times.
Team captains Michael Weber and Nicholas Stevens helped lead the team with their individual wins in their respective events.
Weber took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51:58. He also was victorious in the 200-yard back finishing with a time of 1:54.08.
Stevens took first in the 500-yard freestyle and clocked in at 4:50.29.
Junior Joseph Morris took the top spot in the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes with times of 55:84 and 2:05.46 respectively.
Junior Drew Tharp finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50:74 and the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.62.
“They wanted to beat Miami,” Thomas said. “They wanted to give them a run for the money and everybody went into it wanting to do well.”
Ball State has competed well on the road this year though swimming in the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center is a favorite for the Cardinals.
“The opportunity to swim in such an outstanding facility always brings out some great performances,” he said.
The Cardinals will have a month off from competition until the Mid-American Conference Championship beginning on Mar. 7 in Carbondale, Ill.
“It’s always nice to go into your taper phase with the best time,” he said. “Knowing that with more rest they're going to go a lot faster.”
