MSO hosts dance event at Muncie Mall

Muncie Mall is going to turn into a scene from a musical Saturday during the Muncie Symphony Orchestra’s event “Dance, Dance, Dance!”

The event, which will start at 7:30 p.m. outside Macy’s, will offer everything from swing dancing to the foxtrot and the waltz.

“Since last year, we were looking to expand the range of entertainment we were offering in the community,” said Alena McKenzie, executive director of MSO. “We added a few unconventional events. They are not what peo?ple usually expect a symphony to do.”

The MSO is bringing together Ball State’s Ballroom Dance League, the Holiday Dinner & Dance Club, 5 Star Dance Studio and professional dancer and choreographer Ya’kov Eden.

Each group will do a short demo before opening up for everyone to join while The Larry McWilliams’ group plays live.

“I’m looking forward to experiencing dancing to live music because I’ve never done that before,” said Vance Yount, a junior public relations major, who has been ballroom dancing for five years. “It’s going to be a new and wonderful experience to dance with a live band and see how that is different.”

Tickets cost $30 for the public and $15 for students. All of the proceeds will go toward the MSO’s main season, which includes six orchestral concerts.

McKenzie said because they can’t control people without tickets from joining the dance, ticket holders will be entered in a drawing for free dance lessons at 5 Star Dance Studio and will receive special 15 percent discounts to Macy’s.
